2 weeks until the start of: 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence

The 2009 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence is rapidly approaching! Just two weeks now until the start on November 25th. This means that it is time to start planning your activities for this year!

The theme for this year is: Commit ▪ Act ▪ Demand: We CAN End Violence Against Women!

Commit: We are All Responsible

Act: We Can All Make a Difference

Demand: We Are All Accountable

Some of the events at UNHCR Headquarters:

1) The 16 Days will be launched by the High Commissioner with a speech on the 25th of November. We also plan to show our support to the Stop Rape Now Campaign through a record-breaking event by having all the UNHCR staff in the building doing UN Action’s (*) crossed-arm ‘X’ gesture at the same time. The crossed-arm ‘X’ gesture is a way to make a statement that sexual violence will not be tolerated and to show solidarity to the Stop Rape Now Campaign. For more information see: www.stoprapenow.org

(*) UN Action Against Sexual Violence in Conflict, which unites the work of 12 UN entities with the goal of ending sexual violence in conflict. For more information see: http://www.stoprapenow.org/docs/UNAction_en_brief.pdf

It would be great if you brought this up in your 16 Days campaigns in the field as well, and it would be very much appreciated if you send us pictures of you and your colleagues, partners and persons of concern with crossed arms.

We are also having a Food for Thought on SCR 1820 and 1888 and sexual violence against women and girls in conflict.

Read SCR 1820 on: http://www.unhcr.org/refworld/docid/485bbca72.html

Read SCR 1888 on: http://www.unhcr.org/refworld/type,RESOLUTION,,,4ac9aa152,0.html

2) We will launch a film on Sexual and Gender Based Violence, which is part of a series of protection films, which were made in collaboration with FilmAid in Kenya, to visualize certain chapters of the UNHCR Handbook for the Protection of Women and Girls. The series consist of four films about Education, SGBV, Empowerment and Gender Equality. The films will be made available to the field early next year.

3) The CD-ROMs containing the newly translated versions (French, Spanish & Arabic) of the UNHCR Handbook for the Protection of Women and Girls will be released.

Good Luck!
