The Batman Effect

It’s helpful to look at what messages young people are receiving in order to track why it’s difficult to make changes around gender mainstreaming. This semester I’m co-teaching Violence Against Women: A Global Perspective to a freshman university class in Virginia and one of our first assignments is to have students compare the descriptions of male and female characters on the website for the animated Batman series.

You may notice – all of the female characters on the site are defined in relation to men. Take a look at the descriptions… what else to you see?
