Towards a New UN Gender Equality Entity

The UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) is almost universally accepted as the international bill of women’s rights and the Beijing Platform for Action (BPfA) as its plan of operation. This is an excerpt from an AWID article that describes the UN’s effect on a focus on gender issues worldwide and some proposals for a new UN agency that will combine UN entities to provide on single voice on gender equality. Currently the UN has four such entities: the Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW), the Office of the Special Advisor on Gender Issues and the Advancement of Women (OSAGI), the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), and the United Nations International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW).
